Project Overview

An online counseling practice needed a reliable tracking system to measure website inquiries and better understand the performance of its Google Ads campaigns.

The objective was to track form submissions, phone-number clicks, and email clicks while ensuring that advertising campaigns focused on meaningful lead-generation actions.

The Challenge

The practice was already running Google Ads but needed a structured way to measure different types of website interactions.

Without properly configured conversion measurement, it can be difficult to distinguish actual lead submissions from visitors who simply click a contact link or visit a contact page.

The project also required additional privacy considerations because the business operates in the mental health industry.

Google Ads Conversion Tracking Setup

I implemented a tracking system using Google Tag Manager (GTM), Google Analytics 4 (GA4), and Google Ads.

The implementation included:

  • Configuring GA4 and Google Ads tags through GTM.
  • Tracking form submissions using the website’s thank-you page.
  • Implementing GA4 events for phone and email clicks.
  • Configuring Google Ads conversion actions for website contact clicks.
  • Keeping form submissions as Primary conversions and website phone/email clicks as Secondary.
  • Reviewing campaign conversion goals and bidding settings.
  • Applying privacy-focused settings, including disabling advertising personalization signals and automatic user-provided data collection.

The implementation followed relevant Google Tag Manager conversion tracking guidance and Google Analytics recommended event practices.

Testing and Verification

After implementation, I tested the tracking configuration using Google Tag Assistant.

All seven GTM tags fired successfully during testing. GA4 and Google Ads measurement requests were also observed for the configured interactions.

The GTM container was subsequently published, making the tracking configuration live.

Results and Outcome

The project delivered a structured conversion measurement system that distinguishes form submissions from phone and email clicks.

The setup provides a foundation for clearer lead reporting and better-informed advertising decisions.

Note: Live ad-attributed lead reporting and GA4 property-level verification were still pending at project completion. No increase in leads or advertising performance is claimed.
