Challenge

A U.S.-based personal injury law firm needed reliable conversion tracking for its ChatGPT Ads campaign.

The campaign was already running, but conversion tracking had not been configured. This meant the business could monitor impressions, clicks, and advertising costs without knowing which website actions were resulting from its ads.

The main goal was to measure three important lead-generation activities:

  • Contact form submissions
  • Phone number clicks
  • Email address clicks

The website already used WordPress, Elementor, and Google Tag Manager for Google Ads and GA4 tracking. The challenge was to integrate ChatGPT Ads conversion tracking into this existing setup without unnecessary duplication.

Services provided

ChatGPT Ads conversion tracking setup, OpenAI Pixel installation, Google Tag Manager configuration, custom conversion event creation, form submission tracking, phone and email click tracking, event testing, and campaign conversion configuration.

Approach

I reviewed the website’s existing tracking setup and identified opportunities to reuse its Google Tag Manager triggers.

Rather than rebuilding the tracking system, I integrated the OpenAI Pixel with the existing WordPress website and used GTM to manage conversion events.

The implementation focused on separating actual form inquiries from phone and email interactions, allowing each action to be measured independently.

Implementation

1. OpenAI Pixel installation

I created a website data source in ChatGPT Ads Manager and installed the OpenAI Pixel through Elementor’s Custom Code feature.

The Pixel was configured to load in the website’s <head> section across the site.

I then verified that the Pixel initialized correctly and that ChatGPT Ads Manager received events from the website.

2. Contact form conversion tracking

The website’s consultation form redirected visitors to a dedicated Thank You page after successful submission.

I created a lead_created conversion event in ChatGPT Ads Manager and configured a Custom HTML tag in Google Tag Manager.

The tag used the existing Thank You page trigger to send the lead event to OpenAI.

3. Phone click tracking

I created a custom phone_click conversion event to measure interactions with clickable telephone links.

The existing GTM trigger detected links containing tel:.

I connected this trigger to a new ChatGPT Ads event tag, allowing phone clicks to be tracked without affecting existing Google Ads or GA4 tags.

4. Email click tracking

I configured an additional custom conversion event, email_click, to measure clicks on email links.

This event reused the existing GTM trigger for links containing mailto:.

The separate event provides visibility into visitors who choose email as their preferred contact method.

5. Testing and campaign integration

Before publishing, I tested the conversion tags using Google Tag Manager Preview and Tag Assistant.

I also checked the ChatGPT Ads Manager Event Stream to confirm that OpenAI received each event.

After successful testing, I published the GTM changes and linked all three conversion events to the active ChatGPT Ads campaign.

Results

The project delivered a working conversion tracking setup for three important website actions.

3 conversion events configured and verified:

  • lead_created — Contact form lead
  • phone_click — Telephone link interaction
  • email_click — Email link interaction

All three event types were successfully received in ChatGPT Ads Manager during testing.

The conversion tags were published through Google Tag Manager, and the events were connected to the active advertising campaign.

The business now has the technical foundation to measure and analyze website contact actions associated with ChatGPT Ads traffic as attributed conversion data becomes available.

The project focused on tracking implementation and validation rather than campaign optimization. Actual ad-attributed lead volume and return on investment had not yet been established.

Supporting context

  • Website platform: WordPress + Elementor
  • Tag management: Google Tag Manager
  • Advertising platform: ChatGPT Ads
  • Tracking technology: OpenAI Pixel
  • Lead conversion: lead_created
  • Additional events: phone_click, email_click
  • Validation: GTM Preview, Tag Assistant, ChatGPT Ads Event Stream
  • Campaign integration: All three conversions linked to the active campaign

Measurement considerations: Form tracking uses the Thank You page, so direct visits or reloads may also trigger the lead event. Phone and email events measure clicks, not completed calls or delivered messages.
